Tipperary was not one of the Republic’s smallest counties by population. CSO Census 2022 table FY001 gives 167,895 people. Sorting the 26 named county entries by population places Tipperary seventh-largest, with six larger counties and nineteen smaller ones. That ranking is our calculation from the CSO table, not a ranking authored by the CSO. The RSA’s separate 1 January 2024 release counted sixteen Tipperary road deaths for 2023. A population figure and a death count do not by themselves establish a highest per-capita death-rate ranking. Our question for a population-adjusted comparison is which common period and denominator would be used for every county.
