Hidden Dips and Crests

Rural roads often feature undulating terrain, leading to hidden dips and crests that can significantly reduce a driver's line of sight. A hidden dip is a section of road that drops away suddenly, obscuring the view of what lies beyond. Conversely, a crest is the top of a hill where the road begins to descend, similarly limiting the view of the road ahead. Both scenarios present significant hazards because they can conceal oncoming traffic, pedestrians, cyclists, animals, or other obstructions until it is too late to react safely.

The RSA and the UK's Highway Code emphasize the importance of driving at a speed that allows you to stop within the distance you can see to be clear. This principle is particularly critical when approaching hidden dips and crests. Drivers should anticipate that there might be an unseen hazard and adjust their speed accordingly. Reducing speed provides more time to react and allows for a safer stopping distance if an obstacle suddenly appears.

When approaching a crest, it is advisable to keep well to your side of the road, especially if there is no central marking, to avoid colliding with any vehicle that might be over the crest and potentially encroaching on your lane. Similarly, when descending into a dip, be prepared for the road to curve or for hazards to become visible only at the last moment. The road surface itself might also change within a dip, potentially holding water or debris.

Advanced driving techniques, such as the 'limit point of vision' or 'vanishing point' technique, are particularly useful in these situations. This involves continuously assessing the furthest point of the road you can see and adjusting your speed so that you can always stop within that visible distance. By proactively managing speed and maintaining a high level of observation, drivers can effectively mitigate the risks associated with hidden dips and crests on rural roads.
