Both the RSA and the UK Highway Code provide comprehensive guidance on the safe execution of overtaking manoeuvres, stressing that it should only be attempted when it is absolutely safe and necessary.

Before initiating an overtake, drivers must perform a thorough 'OSM' (Observe, Signal, Manoeuvre) routine. This involves checking mirrors, assessing the road ahead for oncoming traffic, evaluating the speed and intentions of the vehicle being overtaken, and looking for potential hazards such as junctions, bends, or changes in road gradient. A critical aspect is ensuring there is sufficient clear road ahead to complete the manoeuvre safely, without having to accelerate excessively or cut back in sharply.

Key considerations include the speed of the vehicle being overtaken, the speed of your own vehicle, and the speed of any oncoming traffic. It is imperative to have a significant speed differential to complete the overtake swiftly and efficiently. Never overtake if there is any doubt about the safety of the manoeuvre. Signs and road markings, such as solid white lines, indicate areas where overtaking is prohibited because of restricted visibility or other hazards. Adhering to these prohibitions is non-negotiable.

Furthermore, drivers must be mindful of the vehicle they are overtaking. Never overtake on the left unless traffic is queuing and moving slowly in adjacent lanes. Be aware of vulnerable road users, such as cyclists or horse riders, who may require more space. After completing the overtake, signal clearly and move back into your lane smoothly, ensuring you can see the overtaken vehicle in your rearview mirror before doing so.
